Navigating Challenges and Affirming Support for Families with Transgender and Gender Diverse Youth

This session delves into the multifaceted challenges and concerns transgender and gender expansive (TGX) youth and their families encounter, including but not limited to barriers to accessing healthcare, rejection and lack of social support, discrimination and bullying in public settings, and health disparities as well as the crucial role providers can play in
addressing these roadblocks. Through a combination of data, case studies, and lived experiences, we will explore societal norms, cultural attitudes, and systemic inequalities that contribute to the marginalization and discrimination experienced by TGX individuals. This includes recognizing and addressing providers' personal biases that may hinder the provision of affirming support to these families and the myths surrounding TGX youth that may feed these biases. In addition, this session will highlight the tools, resources, and solutions available to providers and the families they serve to provide affirming support for transgender and gender diverse youth.

Objectives

youth face in Texas and beyond
● Recognize personal biases and roadblocks to providing affirming support to families
of trans and gender diverse youth
