First Step Program

First Step is a one-time psychological assessment and referral process for a child and his or her family.  A First Step appointment culminates in providing focused recommendations for mental health and other types of treatment. The first hour involves psychological screening of the child for verbal and nonverbal intellectual functioning, visual-motor skills (i.e., drawing, writing and spelling abilities), and story-making exercises.  Caregivers also complete sentence completion tasks to share their own experience and their understanding of the family members’ histories, strengths and needs.  The assessment session is followed by a comprehensive clinical interview with child and family.  The interview obtains information about the reason for the referral, goals of the child and family, family history, behavioral observations and recommendations for mental health and other interventions.  The interview is followed by a warm handoff of the family to a Care Coordinator who helps the family obtain recommended services.  The Care Coordinator works with the family at this initial appointment and in follow up contacts at 7-, 30- and 60-day intervals.  We also have a process within the service that is intended to enhance the caregivers’ mental health literacy by providing a better understanding of the child’s current mental health condition.

Healing the Ancestral Wounds: Childhood Trauma, Intergenerational Trauma, and Health

Research has demonstrated a strong link between childhood trauma, historical and intergenerational trauma and racialized trauma and mental health.  Newer research has shown that early childhood trauma has a direct effect on the neural circuitry of the brain in such a way that traits such as compulsivity, impulsivity and emotional dysregulation are promoted.  These traits are underlying cornerstones of most mental health disorders.  The definition of trauma has changed over time, providing a clearer picture of the various types and timing of trauma and its effect on the brain.  Studies beginning with the offspring of Holocaust survivors and now with Native populations and African Americans are demonstrating that the effects of trauma can be passed on to future generations through epigenetic changes thereby increasing mental and physical health risks for those future generations. The synthesis of these factors associated with acute, chronic and intergenerational trauma is important.  Early trauma treatment can help interrupt this cascade of effects of childhood adversity to adult and intergenerational physical and mental health issues.

Objectives:
  • Participants will be able to understand the various ways in which trauma and childhood adversity can change the brain
  • Participants will be able to list 3 treatments that are geared towards improving cognition, impulsivity and recovery from trauma.
  • Participants will be able to describe how insecure attachment can result from trauma.

Early Childhood Mental Health, Trauma, and Systems of Care

Research shows the significant and long-lasting benefits that secure attachments, positive parenting, and early intervention can have on a child’s long-term functioning. On the other hand, trauma, stress, and ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) can have a lasting toll on health, wellness, and growth if intervention is not provided. What is often not recognized is the cruciality of mental health functioning in the earliest years. Practices and techniques based in attachment theory, research, and evidence-based practices offered through a trauma-informed lens show the benefits not only to strengthen a parent-child relationship, but also for a human’s optimal brain and social-emotional development, beginning from the earliest days of a child’s life

Through this workshop, participants will learn to:
  • Recognize the importance of early childhood relationships and mental health in future development.
  • Understand the impact of early childhood trauma on cognitive, emotional, and language development.
  • Become aware of protective factors and best practices for treating young children.
